5 grandparents' tips for saving at home
Our grandparents were true home economists. Which of their tips are still today useful for us? We compile five of them
This is how elder used to save... and how we can too!
Common knowledge is often the best way for saving in our domestic economy. Our grandparents are pioneers in the art of making ends meet and make the most of household resources without consuming excessively. Which of these tricks can we use in our daily lives to save in a sustainable way?
We show you five of these thoughts –did you know any already?- and invite you to share yours.
Natural insecticide
Many people are allergic to insecticides, which can also be harmful to the ozone layer in case of sprays. The solution to prevent moths from eating our clothes is to sprinkle a few grains of black pepper in closets. The moths will not approach and that's how people used to keep their clothes in perfect condition.
The oven as a heat source
Surely one of the most beautiful childhood memories that we all keep has to do with those afternoons in our grandma’s kitchen, watching her cook and feeling fully protected.
Perhaps a fact that helped was that grandma knew that disconnecting the heating and opening the turned off oven after cooking provided a very comfortable –and free- heat.
Make the most of your pressure cooker
Do you have a pressure cooker at home? It is likely. Did you ever used? It is probably not. Well, it's time to change that. Did you know that vegetables are much better steamed in a pressure cooker? Besides, you will save energy because all the food is prepared in a short time.
Wait until you have a lot of clothes to iron
This trick has to do with ironing. As far as possible, it is recommended to avoid using it whenever you need to iron a garment. Get used to accumulate a lot of clothing to use it. You will save energy, time and money.
Buy fresh produce daily
Finally, try to buy fresh products daily or at most every two days. Our grandmothers would go regularly to the market: not only you will help boost local responsible consumption, but you will also ensure that the produce does not expire and will avoid throwing food away.
